Laura in North Carolina asked:

I don’t really care what I grow. I don’t want to invest too much money in case it doesn’t work out though.

You can grow just about anything in a south facing window. We have a table in front of a south window and grow several different plants and flowers. It is so nice to have an indoor garden during the cold winter months.

Fill pots with a good potting soil such as Miracle-Gro. Don’t forget to water as soil becomes dry. You can stick your finder down into the soil to see if it need watering.

Be sure to keep a bowl or something sort or deep under your pots to catch the water as it drains.

If you want ivies and nothing else, you can use just about any window. Go to this link:

    Hi:
There are different plant specimens you can grow. I am a landscaper and designer and one of the most popular indoor gardens now are indoor herb gardens. They are inexpensive and easy to grow. You can do a wonderful container garden. Herbs will give you wonderful color as well as some culinary use in your kitchen. Most herbs need some sun, so plan on a sunny location.

Herb seeds are easy to germinate if you do the right steps. Purchase some light weight potting soil with no bard. Add some vermiculite and some humus. Add some hot water to the soil mixture, as this is great for the root systems to get established. When you buy seeds, most companies will have light requirements on the package and time of germination for each seed.

You could also do perennial or annual flowers as well as some veggies. I will link you to the Spice and herb section of my website. There is a page on growing herbs from seeds. This may help you. You do the same process with flowers or veggies. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if you can find any other information that might be of use to you. In the garden project section, there is a page on container gardens. Good luck to you and have a great day!

Lots of things grow happily inside. If you have friends with indoor plants ask them for cuttings. Many will root in water within a week and can be transplanted to pots later:

Impatiens, begonias, geraniums, pothos, neomarcia, philodendron, scheffelera, wandering jew, cyperus, coleus, thyme, basil, and a bazillion more.

Another inexpensive source is good old Wallyworld. Rescue a half price, looks pitiful plant kid.

    want cuttings? have fun

peace lilies are great starters. if in full sun and given lots of water they will flower all the time. you must water all the time

if the leaves are wilted and look like they are dead, put warm ish water on it for 10 minutes and in about 2 hours it will come back up.

also palm trees such as a parlor palm and sago palm are nice.

sago plans are glossy cycads. do a yahoo search

    good luck
