Home cooking is one of the main day to day jobs every household has to cope with, therefore the less time we spend in the kitchen the more quality time we have to relax after a hard day at the office so to speak. There are various ways of cutting cooking time down, for example; junk food delivered to the door, microwave food and the cooking of food using a Pressure Cooker. Pressure Cookers have been around for some time now, The first version of a pressure cooker was created by a French physicist named Denis Papin, he had a life span of 65 years, (1647-1712). In the year of 1679 he created a large cast iron pot with a tightly fitted lid that locked, (the exact way a pressure cooker works today), His creation raised the boiling point of water, and at a much higher temperature, up to 15% more, meat cooked very quickly and was very tender even bones became soft. Explosions were common, so Papin designed a safety pressure release valve which got him acclamation with the Royal Society in 1680.
These days’ pressure cookers come in various sizes the most common is a 6 quart pot, the best one’s to buy are manufactured from stainless steel with a thick bottom, and this type will allow you to brown your meat or sauté on top of the stove before you actually use the pressure cooker. Some people will prefer the electric models and some will go for the older type which sits on top of the stove, both works just the same, it is simply down to preference at the end of the day.
Pressure cooking in the home is effortless and quick, just add the water and the food then heat by conventional methods, on the stove or if you have an electric model then turn on and leave for the allotted time and the pressure cooker will do the rest, no watching to make sure the pan won’t boil over as you would in traditional cooking. With pressure cooking you keep all the goodness in, the natural flavors, vitamins and minerals, resulting in a much healthier tastier meal.
The time saved over conventional cooking is up to 70% or more, therefore less time usage of gas or electric so it is energy efficient and cheaper to cook with, the kitchen is clean as there is only one utensil being used so washing up is kept to a minimum, (a cooks dream).
For the small family or someone living on their own the pressure cooking is the ideal way to prepare food and an essential utensil to have in your kitchen. Cook all your food together meats and vegetables all go in the same pot in various compartments, but you must stick to the recipe guide in your user’s manual as over cooking vegetables will lead to stewing, (the sort you were used to at school dinners)
Pressure cooker really have made cooking much easier and much more convenient. Remember these appliancies can be dangerous you should always read the user manual and most importantly read the safety precautions before you use your pressure cooker for the first time. Never leave a pressure cooker unattended if you have small children in your home.
