Curious about indoor organic gardening?
Over the course of the past century, people in this country have been eating vegetables and fruits laden with harmful pesticides and growth hormones. To prevent ingesting these toxins, people choose to eat plants that are organically grown instead. There has been a popular trend in recent years towards organic fruit and vegetables, and there is no doubt that this type of food is much better for you overall.
Unfortunately, organic food tends to be expensive, and some types of organic fruit and vegetables may be hard to find in your local grocery store. But don’t despair! With a little bit of sweat and elbow grease, you can set up your own indoor organic garden. It’s really not as complicated as it sounds! You’ll be able to enjoy fresh, colorful, tasty organic vegetables on a regular basis without spending tons of money, or even having to step out of your home at all!
Indoor organic gardening is a great option for those of us who live in apartment buildings or condos, or have a yard that is too small to house a garden.
Simply put, pretty much everything that can be grown outside can be grown indoors as well. Almost all vegetables can be fit into a potting container. Obviously, big vegetables need big pots. Think about it in terms of its size once it reaches maturity. Organic, nutrient-rich soil can be purchased at the garden center at Lowe’s or any other store that offers indoor organic gardening products. There, you will also need to purchase your plants and seeds. If you purchase plants, make sure you select those that are the best-looking, brightest, and strongest.
Once you take your plants home, set them in front of a sunny window before transferring them into their pots. This will allow them to “get used” to their new environment. When you do transfer them to pots, make sure you read the directions, and/or do some research on the proper way to plant them. If you are planting seeds, make sure you know how deep in the soil to plant them.
One great way to ensure beautiful, healthy vegetables for your indoor organic gardening is to use compost. This can be created yourself using everyday waste items from your kitchen. Layer shredded paper items such as newspapers, paper bags, and paper towels. Combine this with raw fruit/vegetable waste such as banana peels and apple cores. Coffee grounds can also be used in the mixture.
Use this compost as organic fertilizer for your plants. This fertilizer will be jam-packed full of all the minerals and nutrients that your plants need to flourish. Combine this fertilizer with a bit of sunlight and you will be good to go. But properly caring for your plants will make all the difference when it comes to the success of your indoor organic gardening hobby. Learning to develop a green thumb indoors will greatly improve your overall gardening ability and allow you to enjoy fresh, delicious vegetables all year round.
