I don't know what your soil is like in Illinois ; if it is rather heavy , you may need to lighten it , digging in some straw , real animal manure or sand . If you are already using a variety of fertilizers , discuss with your local supplier , garden shop , nurseries , which is the best .
To grow plants like cucumbers , pumpkins , melons , tomatoes , you need a lot of water , applied early morning and evening , after sundown . Don't weed your garden , just tread the weeds down on the ground . I was taught this by a show gardener ; the weeds do not take sufficient nutrients out of the soil , but pressed down , keep the moisture in .

Cucumbers like full sunlight. Check out the next link for cucumber information. Male blossoms are supposed to drop females shouldn't drop. If they do the web site tells you how to fertilize them manually.

Pumpkins will suffer if there isn't enough water. They sometimes need to be manually fertilized as well.
