A heated bird bath is a fantastic technique to provide comfort and refuge for feathered friends as well as other small animals throughout the cold winter time. It provides a sanctuary for those who would otherwise not have another option to use for keeping warm & getting refreshed during a time of the year when there are not a lot of other options available.

The concept is simple.  A small heater is placed directly in contact with the water to maintain it at a constant, comfortable temp or the bird bath itself has one integrated into the bottom.  It has to be warm enough to be of comfort for the animals without giving it a Jacuzzi effect, that could harm the animals.  Basically, it keeps the water temp above freezing so no ice forms.  That’s why most of the available models have a pre-set temperature therefore that there is no accidental adjusting.

But these units aren’t designed to run even in the summertime.  They usually have a thermostat that operates in the same capacity as the one in your home.  When the temp falls below a certain level then the heater turns on and warms the water.  This eliminates wasting energy.  A few models even have a solar design so that you will not have to run electricity to it.

A purchaser will soon see that many different models exist.  Many of which include standing, ground level heated bird bath and those that could be mounted on decks or patios.  You need to place them where they’ll offer the most benefit for little animals bearing in mind how to run power out to it.

Even though there are a lot of different varieties available on the market you’ll have to be prepared to pay for offering birds this level of luxury.  You can probably find some cheaper models on the internet and there are sites with reviews that may provide you with information.  Customer reviews can aid in this area by eliminating a few of the choices which might be bad for you and let you know which ones work well.

Many people don’t like the idea of using a heated bird bath because they feel it impedes with their natural instinct in nature to survive.  This isn’t really true as providing this for birds only gives them a refuge, if even for a very short time, from the cold.  There is no inherent danger in changing their life-style by giving them a warm place to bathe and drink.  Just be sure to keep it clean as they will bathe in it.
